Hugh Smith made his professional debut in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples in 1996. He has performed with Opera de Paris, l'Opera National de Paris, Berlin Deutsche Oper, Concertgebouw, Den Norske Opera, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Lithuanian Opera, Netherlands Opera, New National Theatre, Tokyo, Opera North, The New Israeli Opera, Opera de Puerto Rico, and Edinburgh Festival.

In the United States he has appeared at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Metropolitan Opera in the Parks, Richard Tucker Gala, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dayton, Houston Grand Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Pacific, San Diego Opera, San Francisco Opera, Spoleto Festival, Toledo Opera, and the Kennedy Center in honor of Luciano Pavarotti.

In 2008 Mr. Smith performs Forza del Destino with the Israeli Opera, Don Carlos with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta, La Gioconda Israeli Opera and Otello in Wroclaw, Poland.

In 2007, he appeared in Manon Lescaut with The Florida Grand Opera and in Une tragédie Florentine by Alexander Von Zemlinsky with the Opera de Lyon (France). He completed the year in St. Louis with Holiday concerts with Nicole Cabell, soprano, and the Compton Heights Concert Band. In January 2008, Hugh is performing in the New Israeli Opera's production of La Forza Del Destino.

In 2005, Hugh sang Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest under Maestro Valery Gergiev; Netherlands Opera in Norma; a recital at Bowling Green State University; and sang with the Madison Symphony in Mahler's Symphony No. 8. Summer 2005 included Tokyo's New National Theatre (Madame Butterfly), and soloist with Sigrun Hjalmtysdottir (Iceland's Diddú) in Saint Louis. He completed 2005 in Manon Lescaut in Norway.

2006 took him to Tel-Aviv for The New Israeli Opera production of Don Carlos. He toured with Opera North; performed Lohengrin at Opera de Lyon, France; and Fancuilla del West at the Concertgebouw.

Smith holds a Masters in Music from Bowling Green State University, Ohio and continued his studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts, Philadelphia.
