Thomas Bauer received his basic musical training as member of
the Regensburg Cathedral Choir. He studied singing with Hanno Blaschke in the
"Hochschule f?r Musik" in Munich, graduating with distinction. His opera debut
under the direction of August Everding at the Prinzregententheater was in Munich
in 1997.
After singing numerous major roles, he was extraordinarily acclaimed for his
portrayal of the sophisticated title role in Wolfgang Rihm's chamber
opera Jakob Lenz at the Salzburg Festival 2000. Bauer's
particular affinity for contemporary opera has recently brought him together
with the composer Manfred Stahnke, working on the first Internet
opera, "Orpheus:Kristall", for the Munich Biennale 2002 - with Bauer
in the leading role as a modern-day Orpheus.
He has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Bavarian Federal
Government, and the Ernst von Siemens Music Endowment Fund.
Other awards were awarded by the Cite Internationale des Arts (Paris)
and the "Deutscher Musikwettbewerb".
For his excellent performances in the field of contemporary music, in 2003 he
is being awarded the first Schneider Schott Music Prize to be
awarded to a vocalist. For his stunning Lieder evening debut in the old emperor's
city of Kyoto he received the popular "2003 Aoyama Music Award".
Thomas E. Bauer is working on current projects with celebrated
conductors like Philippe Herreweghe, Frieder Bernius, HK Gruber, Marcus Creed,
Christoph Poppen, Hanns-Martin Schneidt and their orchestras, and is performing
in the Philharmonie of Munich and Berlin, at the Leipzig Gewandhaus,
the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Palais
des Beaux Arts Bruxelles, among others.
