
Born in 1975 in Gorky (Russia), Sergey Ostrovsky is a winner
of the First Prize in the Aviv Competitions in Tel Aviv (1999)
and 5th place in the international Rudolf Lipizer competition (1995 Italy).
Sergey Ostrovsky started his violin studies at the age of 6 with
David Lapidus. In 1989 he continued his education in the Music High School of
the Art Academy in Gorky. During his studies, Sergey Ostrovsky won
many national competitions and performed with the Gorky Symphony Orchestra
and the Moscow Philharmonic. After his immigration to Israel in 1991,
he continued his studies with Prof. Yair Kless and Irena Svetlova in the Tel
Aviv Rubin Music Academy (Tel Aviv University) and graduated from the Royal
Music Academy in Rotterdam.
During 1993-1995 he served the IDF as an "Outstanding Musician" in their special
education program. Between 1994-1996 he was the leading concertmaster of the
Young Israel Philharmonic, with whom he performed as soloist in
various international tours (Switzerland, Spain and Russia). Mr. Ostrovsky
held the concertmaster position with the Israel Chamber Orchestra (1995-1997)
and the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra (1997-1998). Apart from leading the
respective orchestras, he also played as their soloist under the batons of Philip
Entremont, Zeev Dorman and Doron Salomon.
In March 2000, he debuted with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra under
the conductor Uriel Segal to great public and critic acclaim.
Mr. Ostrovsky is invited by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra
to perform both Mendelssohn and Sibelius concerti in July 2001.
In 1997, Sergey Ostrovsky founded the Aviv
String Quartet (former name "Johannes Quartet"), with which he won the GRAND
PRIX as "The Best Chamber Ensemble and Best Quartet" at the International
Melbourne Chamber Music Competition. The Aviv
Quartet also won the first prize at the Charles Hennen Competition
(1999 Holland), a prize named after the Amadeus Quartet, and a second
place at the Chech Republic "Spring Competition" (1998).
The Aviv Quartet, lead by Sergey Ostrovsky
is scholarshiped by the Alban Berg Quartet (in Cologne, Germany)
and in Rotterdam by Ben Zion Shamir.
The Aviv String Quartet performs regularly
in Israel, Holland, Germany, Australia, USA (Carnegie Hall) Auditorium Louvre
(Paris), and Wigmore Hall (London), and recently toured China.
Sergey Ostrovsky is a regular Scholarship recipient of the American-Israel Cultural Foundation since 1992.
